50th Anniversary of Inundation Days Celebrated in Gold

Today H.U.E. (Historical Underwater Exploration) in partnership with the Lost Villages Historical Society announced they would be issuing a golden coin to commemorate the inundation that occurred on July 1st 1958 for the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Projects.

The two groups will be releasing a limited quantity of 5000 coins with 1000 of the coins being reserved for "Celebration 50", with events happening from June 27th to July 5th.

The 39mm coin is an updated version of the wooden nickel that was issued in Cornwall back in 1958 for the 4 days of inundation. The updated design also includes 9 stars, which signify the 6 towns and 3 hamlets that make up The Lost Villages that were displaced to make way for Lake St. Lawrence.

"We're encouraging everyone to Carry the Coin" explains H.U.E. spokesperson John Earle which is the official theme for the campaign. "Although the coin isn't legal tender we encourage all who buy them as souvenir tokens to keep the coin with them during the 50th anniversary celebration as the coin will gain them free access to Farran?s Park on June 29th."

The coin will sell for $5 each with proceeds going to the Lost Villages Historical Society and be available to purchase on May 5th.

For more information on the coin or where they can be purchased please contact the Lost Villages Historical Society at 613-534-2197 or email
